Founded in 1946, the Assam Football Association (AFA) is the governing body for football in Assam, affiliated with the All India Football Federation. Headquartered in Guwahati, AFA promotes grassroots, youth, and women’s football through leagues and development programs, aiming to strengthen the football ecosystem and nurture talent across the state.

- National Games Gold Medal: The Assam football team won the gold medal at the National Games in 2007, defeating Tamil Nadu in the final via a tie-breaker. They also secured a silver medal at the 1999 National Games in Imphal.
- Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy (U16): Assam has a strong record in junior football, winning the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy

- Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy (U16): Assam has a strong record in junior football, winning the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy (U16) four times: in 1980, 1981, 1981-82, and 2011-12. They were also runners-up in 1983-84.
- B.C. Roy Trophy (Junior Football): Assam has reached the finals of the B.C. Roy Trophy (National Junior Football) four times, finishing as runners-up in 1963-64, 1969-70, 1984-85, and 1996-97.
- School Football (Subroto Mukherjee Cup): Assam's Kokrajhar Government HS School won the prestigious Subroto Mukherjee Cup in 1986, followed by Arya Vidyapith HS School of Guwahati in 1992.
- Individual Talent: Assam has produced several talented footballers who have represented India at various levels, including former Indian national footballers like Debashish Roy and Gilbertson Sangma.
- Assam State Premier League (ASPL): This is the top state-level football league organized by the Assam Football Association. It was established in 2008, discontinued in 2015, and revived in 2023. Assam Rifles has won the title three times.
- Participation in National Tournaments: The Assam Football Association (AFA) actively participates in national competitions such as the Santosh Trophy and the Senior Women's National Football Championship.
